In every season there seems to be one game that a team can point to as key moment. The Concord Carlisle Girls lacrosse team took on their rivals from Acton Boxborough last Thursday in what is always a tough matchup of two of the stronger teams in the Dual Country League. This year CC dominated the Colonials, winning 12-5 and running their winning streak to 5 games.

AB took control at the start, winning the first several draws, controlling the play in the early going, and ultimately getting on the board first to go ahead 1-0 after 5 minutes of play. CC could have easily found themselves down by 2 more goals had CC goalie Conley Ernst not made several key saves in the early going. After withstanding the AB rush CC settled into a very strong defensive and offensive game over the next 20 minutes featuring several crisp passing sequences leading to goals by Allie Barrett, Jenna Carlton, and Cassidy Hale. CC‘s run put them up 4-1
causing AB to call time out before CC could pull too far away. AB regrouped and was awarded an 8 meter shot on the next possession with a chance to cut the CC lead to 2 but Ernst again came up big and stopped what is often an automatic goal. CC then took back control of the game but could not pull away even though they were dominating on offense. The game remained 4-1 as CC had two goals called back for AB defensive penalties and could not finish the penalty shots and also had three more shots hit the goal post. AB then had another chance to get within 2 on a fast break but Ernst again denied the AB bid. CC finally broke through with 2 goals before halftime, the first by Carlton with 1:26 to play and the second by Captain Emma Brandhorst with only 5 seconds left. The defense, led by Ernst and Madeline Leahy, with 2 caused turn overs, and strong support from Briana Stout, Johanna O’Neil, Tessa Dibble, and Emily Mushlitz was outstanding throughout the half, holding AB to just one goal.

AB mounted a comeback to start the second half scoring off the draw only 30 seconds in, making it a still close 6-2 game. CC came right back, wining the next two draws and scoring in less
than a minute on each possession with goals by captains Allie Barrett and Emma Mahoney to stretch the CC lead to 8-2. AB still would not fold, scoring the next goal 2 minutes later to make it 8-3. It looked like AB would continue to chip away at the lead as they won the next draw and had a sustained and patient possession, holding the ball for over 3 minutes in the CC end.  owever the CC defense was again up for the challenge and AB was unable to get a shot off, finally turning the ball over which lead to a quick score by Lexi Goodhue extending CC’s lead to 9-3. Goodhue’s goal was the start of another 4 goal outburst by the Patriots which put the game out of reach at 12-3 with 10 minutes to play. AB closed to within 12-5 but could not solve the CC pressing defense or clock killing offensive over the remainder of the game. In addition to CC’s dominant defense, their offense was balanced with 7 players scoring goals in a tightly contested game.

CC Coach Paul Morrison commented on the team’s momentum as they move into the second half of the regular season: “That was our best effort to date. Conley in goal, and her defensive partners were so tough back there contesting every AB drive to the cage. Our transition game was good, and our attack was balanced. Overall I am very pleased with the effort, but we still have work to do as we made a few unforced turnovers and some bad shots on goal.”
