Westford Academy proved too much for the CC Girls Lacrosse team last Tuesday. It was a tale of two halves as CC led at the half 4-3 but ultimately dropped a 13-5 decision to the defending sectional champions.

The first half featured great goaltending by Conley Ernst and offensive firepower from senior captain Becca Olsen. Westford Academy put pressure on CC early but Ernst made several key saves to keep CC in the game. Mid-way through the first half CC got its offense in gear with a 4 goal run as Olsen tallied two goals and two assists. CC extended its lead to 4-1 with goals by Lexi Goodhue and Hannah Dudley. Westford Academy responded to make it 4-3 at the half in a physical and tightly played game.

The second half was all Westford Academy as their full field pressing defense caused several turnovers and their dominance in ground ball pickups and draw controls created a lopsided number of possessions for the Grey Ghosts. Westford tied the game at 4-4 early in the second half and then extended their lead to 8-4 before CC senior captain Emma Brandhorst registered CCs only goal of the second half. Westford answered Brandhorst’s goal right away to make it 9-5 and then went on a 4 goal run. The combination of Westford’s full field aggressive play, contesting every CC possession, and several missed scoring chances by CC left the Patriots on the short end of the 13-5 final.

“Westford has ten experienced senior athletes returning from a sectional championship team” said CCHS Coach Paul Morrison. “I thought we were poised in the first half and battled hard, but in the second half we could not gain possession and that put our defense under way too much stress.”
