The CC Girls Lacrosse team took to Algonquin’s grass field Thursday in windy and frigid conditions for what was expected to be another close and hard fought match against an always tough Algonquin team. What fans observed exceeded expectations.

This was a game of wills and perseverance as the Tomahawks came out swinging winning the first several draw controls, controlling ball possession and gaining the early lead while the Patriots fought hard to hold their ground defensively waiting for their chance to capitalize.

Several scoring opportunities failed as Algonquin’s goalie made solid stops on both
bounced shot and top corner shots.

CC’s first goal came 5 minutes into the game on a strong drive and finish from Junior Hanna Dudley. But Algonquin responded just 45 seconds later with a goal of their own to take back the lead. The Tomahawks held the lead for the next 10 minutes in what was a physical yet tightly called game. Junior Captain Madeline Leahy was finally the facilitator for the Patriots as she notched back to back goals to help CC take back the lead. The first on a well placed assist from Joanna O’Neil while the second came on a strong drive to net from the left side. Defensively CC played their usual aggressive game
despite numerous whistles and the Patriots earning a season high 18 first half fouls. Patriot Senior Margot Painter had her best game of the season to date as she frustrated Algonquin attackers forcing several turnovers while closing off running lanes. Junior Sophie Shipe was invaluable to CC as well adding two first half forced turnovers and effectively transitioning the ball down field. Captain Conley Ernst made two timely interceptions on Algonquin feeds to help keep the game in check. Dudley and Leahy combined for 5 first half draw controls.

The half ended with CC ahead 3 to 2.

The second half began with CC scoring twice in the first 10 minutes as Leahy scored her third goal then added an assist on the next goal by Junior Grace Andonian. The Tomahawks called time out then followed up with 3 quick goals to tie the game at 5-5. Coach Morrison took a timeout then CC again responded on an Goodhue assist to midfielder Joanna O’Neil who finished nicely. Algonquin again fought back tying the game at 6 apiece with four minutes remaining, but Patriot Andonian would come up with a big goal as she broke free around net and zipped a left handed shot to the back of the net to take back
the lead. Dudley then added the insurance goal on free position shot. The Patriots won the ensuing draw and stalled the ball for the final 2 minutes running out the clock and securing their 8th win of the season.

Coach Morrison “I'm happy that our team is so deep that we can win in so many ways. Algonquin was a tough team on the Defensive end and it was a scrappy game. Our Defense matched their grit and really came through for us. Margot Painter and Sophie Shipe were terrific on defense causing Algonquin to turn the ball over and disrupting their attack. Algonquin's goalie was excellent, and Conley matched her play. Grace Andoninan's late goal was so clutch”.

CC resumes play next week at home Monday versus Weston, Wednesday away at Newton South and Friday home versus Waltham.
