Acton, MA- The CC girls lacrosse team snapped Acton Boxboro’s three game winning streak with a gutsy 11-7 road win on Wednesday. The Patriots are now 3-0 while the Colonials fall to 3-1.

CC started slowly with four turnovers and trailing 1-0 early in the game. They responded by winning the next 5 draw controls resulting in 6 straight goals. Hannah Dudley and Madeline Leahy each found the back of the cage twice followed by Johanna O’Neil and Jenna Carlton who each added a tally.

In spite of freezing rain and hail, both teams played a very physical game. AB challenged CC with their high pressure defense at times double and triple teaming Patriot ball handlers. CC’s defense was equally as effective playing a relentless and punishing style as they consumed AB attackers allowing the Colonials just 3 shots and two goals in the first 29 minutes of play. Junior Brianna Stout led the CC defense while Seniors Margot Painter and Emily Mushlitz and Junior Audrey Hunt made big contributions pressing AB attackers to the outside edges and closing off key shooting and running lanes.

With just over 5 minutes remaining in the half Junior Grace Andonian added to CC’s lead as she zipped a rocket between the AB pipes making the score 7 to 2. AB took advantage of the final seconds with a last second goal that cut the lead to 7-3.

The second half began with neither team able to gain an offensive rhythm. CC matched AB goal for goal with neither able to sustain any momentum. As the game wore on the defensive battle intensified as each team created opposing turnovers. Patriots’ Dudley collected two more tallies while Senior Lexi Goodhue and Sophomore Lucy Gildehaus added a notch each. As time ran down, AB pressed harder on shots trying to narrow the lead but the Patriot defense stiffened as CC goalie Conley Ernst came up with several big saves to maintain a four goal lead.

Coach Morrison "AB is an excellent team, and they put pressure on us all game long. Our defense was the difference with Brianna Stout putting on a defensive clinic. Our midfielders had a terrific day as well with Hannah Dudley leading the way making plays all over the field."

Game notes- CC controlled the draw circle winning 8 of 11 first half draw controls and 4 of 7 second half draws.

Defensively, the Patriots caused 12 AB turnovers and collected a total of 22 ground balls.

Hannah Dudley led the Patriots with 4 goals, 6 draw controls & 3 caused turnovers. Stout had 4 caused turnovers & 4 ground balls, O’Neil 3 caused turnovers, 4 ground balls and Carlton 1 goal, 1 assist & 3 caused turnovers.

Patriot goalie Ernst had 5 saves and a big pass interception during the second half .

CC plays next on Friday when they host Wayland at 4pm at Doug White Field.
